ABOUT GK ICON GOALKEEPING

GK Icon Goalkeeping is part of the wider, GK Icon Academies and GK Icon network, the UK's biggest provider of professional goalkeeper coaching.

​

GK Icon Goalkeeping is run by owner, Joel Canning, who has been part of the GK Icon team since 2016. Joel has been a goalkeeper coach for over 20 years, working from grass roots sides right up to the professional game. Joel has amassed a wealth of knowledge, connections and experience, showing an enormous amount of enthusiasm for all things goalkeeping. 

​

Joel has a fantastic coaching team alongside him, with all of the GK Icon coaches having trained under Joel within the GK Icon weekly sessions for a number of years.

​

GK Icon Goalkeeping offer a fantastic range of goalkeeper coaching services and are always looking to support the next generation of goalkeeper on their journey between the sticks.

We really are proud of each and every one of our goalkeepers.

​

Being a goalkeeper is tough and takes a lot of courage to even give it a go.

​

Below are a few of our success stories to date and we hope to add to these on a regular basis.

Dillon


Dillon started out with GK icon at the tender age of just 6, but soon established himself as a real prospet, earning himself a move to MK dons in the process.

​

Dillon continues to improve and works tirelessly at his game, developing into an outstanding professional and incredibly polite young man.

George


George was the first of Joel's GK Icon goalkeepers to progress to a professional club, signing forms with Luton Town.

​

George now coaches GK icon keepers regularly and shares his experience and knowlesge, giving fantastic technical advice where possible.

​

George has gone on to play local non-league football and continues to work hard, looking to break into the professional game with weekly 121 sessions with joel.

Alfie


An incredibly talented young goalkeeper who found himself in a wonderful position with a number of professional clubs chasing his signature.


Alfie opted to sign for Queens Park Rangers and we are all very excited to see where his goalkeeping goes.

​

Despite his commitments with QPR, Alfie continues to attend regular GK icon camps and holds half termly 121 slots with Joel, to keep an eye on his progress and to provide technical support.

Henry


Henry has signed for Watford FC's academy after a succesful trial period. Henry was spotted whilst attending a joint talent ID event with GK Icon and Football Icon, in order to present the professional club with genuine recruitment opportunities.

​

Henry joined GK icon at a young age and attended a number of our centres, absorbing knowledge from a number of the companies coaches.

​

Henry still looks to attend GK icon camps when his Watford schedule allows and is always a very supportive participant, looking to help others.

Tommy


Despite starting his football career as an outfielder, Tommy soon found a love for goalkeeping and has developed into an incredible shot stopper. Tommy signed for Watford FC's academy after a period training at both GK Icon Aylesbury and Watford.

Hayden


Hayden started GK icon at a young age and immediately displayed his potential, earning recognition and opportunities with a number of professional clubs.

​

Most recently, Hayden opted to join Northampton Town, with their proven track record for developing players into genuine first team starters.

​

Hayden still looks to attend GK icon sessions whenever his Northampton commitments allow and is always a very popular member of our sessions.

Ollie


Ollie joined the outstanding MK Dons academy after a successful period attending GK Icon Berkhamsted. Despite only starting in goal a short time before kicking off his GK Icon journey, Ollie always showed a huge amount of mental strength and determination.

Rex


Since joining GK Icon and working with Joel, Rex represented his school, District (U11/U13), played in the Junior Premier League for a local academy and won Player of the Year for the 2018/19 season. 

​

Rex has always shown great leadership skills and has developed into an outstanding coach, sharing his experiences with the next generation of GK icon goalkeepers.

​

Despite his age, Rex's footballing maturity has always been evident with him making his first team non-league debut at the tender age of 16, making a string of outstanding saves in the process.

Aaryan


An incredibly popular member of GK icon, Aaryan has always worked incredibly hard at his game, has always been keen to gain advice and always asks for suggestions on how to improve his goalkeeping.

​

We as a team were delighted that Aaryan won the Watford FC PDC goalkeeper of the season award for the 2022/23 season and have seen how this has given him even more motivation to develop his game further.

Lee


Lee spent time at both our Watford and Berkhamsted centres before signing terms with Brentford FC's scholarship side. Lee went on to represent Brentford's B side, rubbing shoulders with Premier League legends such as Gareth Barry.

​

Lee has forged a succesful non league career and has now moved to Ireland, looking to play full time and progress his game further.

​

Lee updates Joel regularly with his progress and has regularly found the time to pop into sessions to give support and advice to GK icon keepers.

Amy


Amy spent time at both our Watford and Aylesbury centres, proving her quality week after week before gaining a place with Watford FC's ladies' academy. 

​

Amy continues to play at a good level, always looking for opportunities to learn and develop her game. 

​

Amy coaches at our Aylesbury centre weekly and shares her experiences with our ever growing female goalkeeping population.

Leo


Within a couple of months of starting with GK Icon Leo was asked to join his local side as a goalkeeper and jumped at the opportunity.


Joel and his team were instrumental in this as without the confidence gained from working with them he would not have been able to take the step he has.

​

Leo has been with GK icon for a number of years now and continues to develop his game, with a real confidence with the ball at feet, transitioning into a real modern day GK.

Tom


Tom joined the excellent goalkeeping development program at Cambridge United following a spell with Northampton. Tom always showed a lot of natural talent with some outstanding technique and showed his ability when attending GK Icon holiday camps on a regular basis.

Harry


Harry has taken his game to another level since joining GK Icon in 2017. Harry has taken the next steps in his career, now playing for Wycombe Wanderers advanced development side.

Sean


Sean has developed into an outstanding goalkeeper since joining GK Icon in 2017. Not only has Sean improved his game, but he has progressed into Wycombe Wanderers elite development squad and has also spent time with Arsenal FC.

​

Sean made his semi professinal debut aged just 16 and continues to seek opportunities within the professional game.

​

Sean provides coaching support whenever his full time football scholarship timetable allows.

Grace


Grace has attended a number of our GK icon centres down the years, always striving for improvements and looking to find every inch of development possible.

​

Grace has earned recognition down the years, representing a number of professional clubs girls sides, most recently joining up with Luton Town. 

​

Grace has outstanding technique and shot stopping ability but is also a great communicator and a natural leader.

Juliusz


While many of our current GK icon keepers will know Juliusz only as a coach, he did infact start out as one of our keepers, attending our Watford centre weekly from 2017.

​

Juliusz quickly showed outstanding ability and earned recognistion from a number of clubs and has now gone on to establish himself as a fantastic semi-professional keeper with genuine potential to take his game into the professional game.

​

Juliusz balances his playing time with coaching opportunities with Joel as well as Pro Direct Academy.
